Job Title: Director of Development

Part-time position

 

Job Description: 

CavanKerry Press seeks a team member who can provide professional grant writing services and has experience working in the field of publishing. Our selected applicant will be communicating with our wonderful Board, the NJ State Council on the Arts, supporters, donors, and other affiliates with a goal to increase donor engagement and retention and to grow our base of supporters. You will work with the rest of the team to develop fulfilling experiences for donors and members of the literary community alike.  This role hinges on communication, administrative, and organizational skills. You’ll be reporting to the Publisher.

 

Duties/Responsibilities: 

Essential Functions–

  • Assists the Publisher in functions related to fundraising events, donations, funding appeals, and networking with charity organizations as well as donors
  • Facilitates campaigns, including funder prospecting, special events, campaign reporting, and general campaign support
  • Coordinate donations, create new, and maintain existing relationships with donors
  • Attend meetings with Board of Directors 4 times annually
  • Maintain communication to the Board of Directors via the Board President and directly through email and phone calls as necessary
  • Establish consistent protocol for data input, monitoring results and generating fundraising reports as requested

Marginal Functions–

  • Reconcile all gifts with the Managing Editor and update databases
  • Responsible for thanking and acknowledging donors on a timely basis and identifying opportunities for personalized donor interactions
  • Maintain donor records
  • Coordinate with staff and accountant to develop and oversee annual budgets.
  • Perform any other task that will assist the Press in carrying out its mission, as assigned

Required Skills:

  • Advanced in Google (Gmail, Docs, Sheets) and MS Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to manage and budget for a small team
  • Ability to attract authors and donors to the organization’s programs
  • Top-tier interpersonal and negotiation skills
  • Demonstrated success as a creative thinker and spokesperson
  • Passion and knowledge of literary work, preferably experience in publishing or relevant industry
  • Ability to further CavanKerry’s mission to expand the reach of poetry to a general readership by publishing works that explore the emotional and psychological landscapes of everyday life
  • Advocate for mental health and inclusivity

 

Preferred Education and Experience: 

  • Bachelor’s degree (B.A.) and/or four years’ related work experience or equivalent in the humanities or nonprofits
  • 2 years’ experience securing foundation, donors, and corporate support
  • 2 years’ experience in organizing fundraising events
  • 2 years’ experience in development, database, and publishing
  • Experience in working with volunteers and in coordinating and implementing special events
